Sri Lankafs Expressway Traffic Management System Adopts Allied Telesis Solutions

Allied Telesis K.K. (Head office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, CEO and President: Takayoshi Oshima) is pleased to announce that its group company Allied Telesis Asia Pacific Ltd. (Head office: Singapore) completed the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solutions for Sri Lankafs Southern Expressway Traffic Management System in July 2015, installed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), the main contractor for the countryfs expressway management system.

The traffic management system was installed on Sri Lankafs Southern Expressway, which spans a distance of approximately 120 kilometers from Colombo, the largest city in Sri Lanka, to Matara, a city located in the south of the country. Construction work was performed with a grant-in-aid provided by the Japanese Government. As part of the package deal contracted by MHI for the entire management system, Allied Telesisfs network devices and solutions were adopted for the systemfs ICT infrastructure. Network devices were introduced as part of the ICT infrastructure that connects traffic information signboards, vehicle detection cameras, weather sensors, and other roadside equipment with the central computer systems for data processing and operation status monitoring.

The newly installed traffic management system is designed to provide expressway users with traffic information in a timely manner during inclement weather and when accidents occur. The system will contribute to prevent congestion and secondary disasters, leading to safer and smoother high-speed road traffic. High availability is also required for the system to be used as part of the ICT infrastructure. Allied Telesis solutions are designed to make core switches redundant with Virtual Chassis Stacking (VCS), and provide redundancy to the ring-type network that links the center with expressway interchanges using Ethernet Protected Switched Ring (EPSR) to achieve a high level of availability. In addition, Allied Telesis has adopted PoE switches for industrial use with outdoor applications to connect roadside equipment, helping to achieve stable network environments.
